Digging wells when it doesn’t make sense

2 Kings 3

16 And he said, Thus saith the Lord, Make this valley full of ditches.

17 For thus saith the Lord, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

18 And this is but a light thing in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.

God told the people to dig ditches in order to receive the blessing that HE alone would bestow and send down upon them. They were thirsty and dry as was the land that they were passing through. He’d do this in a radical way as He saw fit, in a way that man could never do. Every good and perfect gift comes from above. God intended to bless these because they sought Him and that’s exactly what He did. But had they not obeyed, they wouldn’t have been able to hold the blessing. It would have came but left just as quickly as it would have ran off. It would have had no holding place.

Obedience is key and God gave them simple directions. Clear but not so clear. He wanted to fill them with water as they were dry and thirsty. He is the well spring of life and His Spirit sustains us, as He is Living Water. He is not limited by us, but we limit ourselves through our lack of faith and unbelief. They probably didn’t want to dig ditches or trenches as the Lord told them to do, and possibly couldn’t understand why, but nevertheless they did. God told them that He’d send water but not by the way they thought that He would. We think of water coming in wind and rain right over us but it came from another place! It came from Edom and it came suddenly. Thank God they were prepared.

You shall not see wind, nor shall you see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water. (17)

It comes from heaven above and flows down from the mountains and into the valleys. You may not see it happen or know how it got there but God makes a way where and when we cannot see. He is Way Maker, Miracle Worker.

Now it happened in the morning, when the grain offering was offered, that suddenly water came by way of Edom, and the land was filled with water. (v 20)

When we offer ourselves up to Him, He can send down anything He wants to and suddenly and early!

Noah built an ark when it did not make sense, but not everyone got use of it. They chose to ignore the warning and instruction to get on board. That is until they saw the need, and then suddenly, it was too late! We must see by faith the need and by faith act when God speaks. I’m sure it didn’t make sense to Noah what he was doing because truth is, no one had ever saw rain at this point. Springs came up from the earth at that time to water the grounds, not down from heaven or the skies as they do now. (Genesis 2:5-6) So of course Noah looked like a crazy man to them until he didn’t. Nevertheless ,he obeyed God.

Radical faith yields radical results.

Or don’t expect to hold!

Will we please God or man?

Will we look foolish now or be left empty and holding the bag then?

Not everyone will understand and not everyone will enter in!

If we want to want the blessing and to enter into God’s rest, we must obey now! Not then. Then, it’ll be too late. God basically told them (2Kings 3:18) that “this is a simple thing for me to do.” Too complex for them and completely out of their reach, but Nothing’s too hard for Him. If you’ve ever been thirsty without a drink in sight, you’d be desperate too. May we be that desperate for His Spirit to be poured out on us.

Without His Spirit we are dry and spiritually unalive, without His life giving presence. He wants to live inside of you and without His Spirit we are hungry and destitute. We’ll only be craving the things of the world that cannot fill us. He is also The Bread of Life. Only He can sustain you. Don’t wake up too late and realize that you got it wrong all along, when He died to make it right. Ask God to reveal Himself unto you and to open your eyes, but you must open your heart and hands in order to make room to receive it!

It’s but a simple thing to God to do what you could never do. He wants to flood you with blessings and favor and gifts and victory, but you must be open and ready to receive. You must obey what He is calling you to, even (and especially) if it does not make sense.

He told them to dig trenches. I’m sure that’s the last thing they wanted to do since they were tired and thirsty. It’s often when we come to the end of ourselves that we find Him, and He will not tell us to do anything that we cannot do. That is why we need Him to pour His Spirit out. It’s not in our own ability but because He said so. He speaks and creation acts. Will you? They were desperate!

The fact is if you’re not ready and prepared how can you hold the blessing? You can and won’t. You’re just going to be a place for run off & not able to hold water. If rains come and there’s no ditches, there is nothing to hold the rain water. But when you dig ditches, it has a place to go. Otherwise flat places are just run offs. We were made for more and we must do our part to prepare. The Bible tells us to SOW but it also tells us PLOW UP our own stony ground (heart). The fact is, you can’t plant on hard soil and expect a harvest. The seeds won’t take, scatter as you may. The fact is: the ditches will only hold to the extent you dig. Dig a little, get a little. Dig a lot, get a lot. The more you seek, the more you find. But also, the deeper you dig, the more room you have to hold.

When we spend time with Jesus it may not seem noticed (which is not why we should be doing it) or maybe it doesn’t seem like we get results right away. The fact is, we’re creating an underground root system that has to grow down before it can ever grow up, and then come out of the ground to produces fruit. (Unless a seed first falls to the ground and dies, it can’t produce anything and so we learn to die to self.) Don’t give up. Don’t grow weary. Endure till the end! For he who endures till the end is saved. He who gives up early can’t expect to bear fruit. Don’t just see the blessing and see others hold it, but prepare your heart and soul (soil) to be able to both receive and hold what He has for you. What’s done in secret will always be revealed in the light.

It was a double blessing for these men. God will pour His Spirit out. Again, the rain didn’t fall from the sky over them, but it came from another place and there valley was filled with water. It comes from above. As the enemies looked across and saw the water as the sun shone on It, it looked or appeared like blood. They THOUGHT that God’s people had slaughtered one another and so they went over there to see. Come to find out, they didn’t and it actually them who’d be destroyed.

God not only did what He said and blessed His people with water for them and their animals, but in the very same blessing He used it for them to destroy their enemies. The enemy had no way out. They simply could not break through. The people did exactly what God said to do, even though it probably didn’t seem appealing or make sense, but nevertheless they did it and look!!

You may be going through something that seems hopeless or you don’t see a way out. But God does! He said to seek Him and we shall find Him WHEN we begin to seek Him early and whole heartedly (and not half). Don’t wait till it’s too late.

Who do you seek? What do you seek? Are you seeking for answers in all the wrong places? Seek God solely and whole heartedly, and He will guide you to who or what He wants to use. Seek Him first and not last. May He be our first and final resource, not our last. Remember, all blessing flow from Him and every single good and perfect gift is from God above. He doesn’t change like we do. Yes, He is able; steady and ready! Are you?

Matthew 6

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
